Religious Education
Richmond Friends Meeting (RFM) values the contributions of children to the life of our meeting. Masking and appropriate distancing maybe expected, depending on COVID situation. In addition, snacks should be brought from home.
Typically, the program for children and youth is scheduled each First Day (Sunday). All rooms for programs are located upstairs in the Education Building. Programs and activities are coordinated by the Religious Education Committee.
Nursery care is available for babies and young children (approximately 3 and younger) during Meeting for Worship, beginning at 10:45am.
The Religious Education Children’s Program (First Day School) for preschool, elementary, and middle school age children focuses on stories, songs, and activities to learn about Quaker beliefs, have fun, and to get to know one another. Each week, children are invited to join their parents for Meeting for Worship from 11:00 – 11:15 and then participate in classroom activities from 11:15 – Rise of Meeting (around noon, except for the third week when Rise of Meeting is around 12:30).
The general monthly schedule September – June is:
-
- First week: Classroom-centered stories, activities, and crafts. Occasionally, the RE program meets at the Clearing, our retreat center in Amelia.
- Second, fourth, and fifth week: Classroom-centered stories, activities, and crafts.
- Third week: All ages meet together outside (weather permitting) for music/singing and a nature activity.
Although class participation is flexible (often depending on the number of children present), generally, we have a class for preschool/primary age children, elementary age children and middle school age children.
Young Friends (high school age youth) take a leadership role in deciding their own program and activities. They plan what to discuss and do during their time together. They also plan events outside of Meeting, often participating in groups with other Quakers for worship, fellowship, and service. Adults are present and participate as needed during the time Young Friends meet.
Our Religious Education program focuses on values of peace, equality, simplicity, connecting to community, stewardship (especially to the earth), and integrity. Activities are planned that help children and youth learn more about the Light within and the guidance of the Spirit.
